Des forêts et des caps

Heading west we changed landscapes, swaping the beaches for magnificent forests. The south-west of WA happens to hold a very unique environment, such as humid climate and rich but shallow soil, leading to special species of trees having evolved and growing there: the tingle trees  (the straight-shooting, high Yellow and Rate species, and the impressive humungous hollow-trunked red species) and the Karri trees (all are varieties of Eucalyptus), two of which you can climb thanks to a scary spiral ladder nailed in the trunks up to hieghts of over 60m... Emeric stalled half-way through the 1st but managed the second, while Emilie stayed on safe grounds!

Continuant vers l'ouest, nous avons changé de paysage, passant des plages à de magnifiques forêts. Le sud-ouest de l'Australie Occidentale se caractérise en effet par des conditions particulières, climat humide et sol fertile peu profond, ce qui a entraîné l'apparition d'espèces d'arbres spécifiques: les Tingles Jaunes et Rate qui sont hauts et droits comme des i, les impressionnants Tingles rouges avec leurs immenses bases creuses, et les Karri (tous sont des variétés d'eucalyptus), dont il est possible d'escalader 2 spécimens de plus de 60m de hauteur grâce à d'effrayants échelons plantés en colimaçon dans les troncs... Emeric a calé à mi-chemin sur le 1er mais a surmonté son vertige pour atteindre le sommet du second pendant qu'Emilie décidait de rester en sécurité sur le bon vieux plancher des vaches!

We then reached Cape Leeuwin, the south-west tip of Australia, where 2 oceans (Indian ocean and Great Australian Bight) meet in thunderous waters.  From there we drove North (nowhere else to go!), through more beautiful forest, in a cave-strickened region. We had to visit at least one, so we picked Mammoth Cave, mind-blowing by its dimensions but also by the amount of mega-fauna remains that were found there (which can still be seen in the rock). Our next stop was Margaret River, a surfing Mecca: no escaping the Australian way of life, so we bought a board, and Emilie had her first session while Emeric struggled to cope with a new size of wave... Another highlight of this leg of the journey was our encounter with Anthony, a Warandi (the Aboriginal people that inhabited this area) guide with whom we spent an evening. He told us of the white Albatros and other Dreamtime stories while initiating Emilie with  the yellow and white ocre. Finally, a short visit to Cape Naturaliste, a fishing moment off the 2-mile long jetty in Busselton (huge rays scaring our fish away!), and we left the area for our next destination: Perth.

Mammoth Cave

Nous avons ensuite atteint le Cap Leeuwin, à l'extrémité Sud-Ouest de de l'Australie, où 2 océans (Indien et ?Austral?) se rencontrent dans des eaux tonitruantes. De là nous sommes montés vers le Nord (pas le choix!), à travers toujours de la magnifique forêt, dans une région constellée de grottes. Il fallait bien en visiter une: Mammoth Cave, hallucinante par ses dimensions mais aussi par la quantité d'ossements de méga-faune qui y a été retrouvée (et dont certains sont encore visibles dans les parois). L'étape suivante a été Margaret River, une Mecque du surf: adoptant le mode de vie Australien, nous avons acheté une planche et Emilie a effectué sa 1e session tandis qu'Emeric apprivoisait tant bien que mal des vagues aux dimensions nouvelles... Un autre grand moment de cette étape fut notre rencontre avec Anthony, guide Warandi (peuplade aborigène qui peuplait la région) avec qui nous avons passé une excellente soirée. Om nous a parlé de l'Albatros blanc et d'autres mythes du Temps du Rêve tout en initiant Emilie à l'ocre jaune et blanc. Une brève visite au Cap Naturaliste, une partie de pêche de la jetée de 2 mile de long de Busselton (où d'immenses raies faisaient fuir notre poisson), et nous avons finalement quitté la région pour notre prochaine destination: Perth.
