Kep & Phnom Penh

Pepper / Poivre

After leaving the Montembault family in Sihanoukville, we spent 36h in what used to be a coastal resort for the French colons at the beginning of the century, and even up to the 70's: a town called Kep. In close proximity to Kampot, the famous pepper producing region, it also has its plantations. Did you know pepper was a vign? A temple within a hollow moutain inhabited with monkeys and a tuk-tuk day-trip through the Cambodian countryside were also part of our program for Monday. Ah, last remarkable feature: the "crab market" in Kep, which isn't much more than a row of shacks along the seafront, but where 2 nights in a row we had the best shrimp and crab dishes you can imagine, with local pepper sauce... Yummi!!!

Après avoir quitté la famille Montembault à Sihanoukville, nous avons passé 36h dans ce qui fût une station balnéaire pour les colons français au début du siècle, et même jusqu'au années 70: une ville du nom de Kep. Voisine de Kampot, la célèbre région productrice de poivre, elle a également ses plantations. Saviez-vous que le poivre était une plante grimpante? Au programme aussi de notre journée de lundi, un temple dans une montagne creuse habitée par les singes et un trip en tuk-tuk dans la campagne Cambodgienne. Ah, dernier point remarquable: le "marché au crabe" de Kep, qui n'est pas grand chose de plus qu'une rangée de restos le long de la côte, mais où 2 soirs d'affilée nous avons mangé les meilleurs plats à base de crevettes et de crabes, accompagnés de sauce au poivre local... Hmmm!!!

We then went through Phnom Penh, to make sure we got a feeling of the world Mélanie and Brice have been living in the last year or so. We thus spent a little over 24h hours in the capital of Cambodia, roaming the streets and visiting the main markets and monuments (Phnom Wat, the Independance monument, the Royal Palace...), as well as the unavoidable but nonetheless sinister Toul Sleng (aka S21, where the Khmer Rouge commited most of their horrors). Not to forget our first experience on a moto-dop, in the middle of the roaring traffic of the city!!!

Nous avons traversé Phnom Penh, pour découvrir le monde dans lequel Mélanie et Brice vivent depuis cette dernière année. Nous avons ainsi passé un peu plus de 24h à nous ballader dans les rues de la capitale du Cambodge, et à visiter les principaux marchés et monuments (Phnom Wat, le monument de l'Indépendance, le Palais Royal...), de même que l'incoutournable et néanmoins sinistre Toul Sleng (alias S21, où le régime Khmer Rouge commit la plupart de ses atrocités). Sans oublier notre première expérience en moto-dop, au milieu du traffic infernal de cette ville!!!
